GREAT BRITAIN QUEEN VICTORIA SURFACE PRINTED STAMPS 1855-1901 PLUS QV & KEVII OFFICIAL STAMPS
The first surface printed stamps were introduced for general use and were printed by De La Rue & Co. London in 1855, the first of which was the 4d carmine on thick blued paper with a small garter watermark. Followed by various papers and watermarks of the same stamp. Sg 62 to sg 66 in 1857. The first stamps were printed on hand made paper and therefor paper thickness varied conciderably. Comb perforation perf 14 was used throughout these issues.

Superb used surface printed stamps will always fetch a premium price. These stamps have to be well centered, cancelled with a CDS datestamp, or very light cancel, no thins and full perforations. There is a listed premium price mentioned in the Stanley Gibbons concise catalogue. At the end of each issue there is a premium price given. eg + 25% for well centered and lightly used and so on.
There was several runs of issues for the surface printed stamps.
The first being the 1855 to 1857 garter issued of 4d carmine and with various shades papers, with small, medium and large garter.
Then in 1856 there was the 6d and 1/- emblems with no check letters.
Then in 1862-1864 there was the 3d to 1/- with small corner check letters, printed with large garter or emblems watermarks.
then in 1865-1867 3d to 1/- was issued with large uncoloured corner letters with large garter and emblems watermarks.
Then in 1867-1880 3d to 2/- were introduced with large coloured corner letters and spray of rose watermarks.
In 1872-1873 a run of 6d with various colours and shades were introduced with large coloured cornet check letters and all had spray of rose watermarks.
In 1867-1883 the high value stamps were introduced 5/- to £1 with large coloured corner check letters. Various watermarks were used from Maltese cross th Large anchor.
In 1873-1880 values from 2½d to 1/- were introduced and there were 4 watermarks used. Spray of rose, small anchor, large garter and orbs, and all stamps had uncoloured corner check letters.
In 1880 a new issue was introduced with stamps with no corner check letters. ½d to 5d. All had imperial crown watermark. Also there was the 1d lilac 14 and 16 dots stamp also with no check letters and imperial crown watermark.
In 1883-1884 a new issue of high value stamps were introduces. These all had a large anchor watermark except the £1 brown lilac which had 3 orbs watermarks. These issues had the large withe corner check letter squares.
Then in 1883 the lilac and green issues were introduces with some check letters in corner squares, and some without corner squares. All with imperial crown watermarks.
Finally in 1887-1901 the Jubilee issues were introduced, all with imperial crown watermark and no check letters.

Values ranged from ½d to £1. All overprinted on normal postage stamps
A huge number of these are forgeries and you should be wary of buying the higher values of these stamps without a RPS certificate. I have had many of these stamps and found them all to be dubious.
